What Age Should My Child Start Dance Classes?
If you’ve been Googling this question, you are definitely not the only parent typing it into their phone at 9pm. It comes up all the time, especially this time of year, when everyone starts thinking about what the kids will get up to next year.
Here’s the honest answer: there’s no single magic age. But there are some good guides.
From about age three
Most of our littlest dancers start around 2.5 to three, in our Tinies program. At this age it’s less about technique and more about movement, music, and following simple instructions in a group. It’s a gentle first taste of being part of a class without a parent in the room.
If your three or four year old can sit through a short story and join in with a game like Simon Says, they’re usually ready to give it a go, however we also have a Parent and Child class for 2.5-5years old for those who need a bit more support with a transition, or to create something special that you can do together.

Primary school age
Kids who start dance between five and eight tend to pick things up fast, because they’re already used to classroom routines from school. This is a really common age to start, and honestly one of the easiest transitions we see. Coordination, confidence and listening skills all come together nicely around here.
Older kids, including complete beginners
We get this question a lot too: is my nine, ten or eleven year old too old to start? Not at all. We have kids who join us for the first time in upper primary and do brilliantly. They’re often more focused, pick up choreography faster, and are motivated because they chose to be there themselves, rather than being enrolled by mum and dad.
This also applies to our teens, many of whom may have some dance experience and not found the right fit at other studios, or those who are new to dance and feel safe to try something new with us!
What actually matters more than age
Instead of fixating on the “right” age, it helps to ask a few other questions. Does your child enjoy moving to music at home? Are they keen to try something new, even if they’re a little nervous about it? Do they need an activity that helps with confidence, or one where they can make friends outside school?
If you can answer yes to any of those, they’re probably ready, whatever age they are.
Why December is a good time to start
December feels like a strange time to start a new activity, with school holidays and Christmas taking over everyone’s calendar. But it’s actually a good window. You get to see how your child settles into a class with none of the pressure of a full term commitment, and you’re sorted for Term 1 next year without the January scramble.
Come and try it out
We’re running a free two week trial through December, open to any child from Tinies right through to our older classes. No pressure and no long term commitment, just two weeks to see if dance is the right fit for your child, and honestly, for you too.
Send us a message or pop into the studio in Caulfield North and we’ll find the right class for your child’s age and stage. We’d love to have you in for a trial before the year is out.

Frequently asked questions
- Is dance a good activity for a shy or anxious kid?
Often, yes. A lot of parents worry it’ll be too much for a shy child, but for many kids it actually helps. Class routines are predictable, no one’s expected to perform solo early on, and dancing alongside other kids the same age tends to bring shy kids out of their shell over time rather than add pressure.
- Why do your classes cover multiple styles instead of just one, like other studios?
Most studios ask you to pick a single style, ballet or jazz or hip hop, and stick with it from day one. We do it differently. Our programs move through several styles across the year, things like jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary depending on the age group, rather than locking kids into just one.
The upside is your child builds a broader base of skills instead of specialising too early, and they get to discover what they actually enjoy rather than you having to guess it before they’ve tried a single class. It also means you don’t need to stress over which single style is “right” for your child, with us they get a taste of everything.
- Is it too late for my child to start at 8, 9 or 10?
Not at all. We covered this above, but it’s worth repeating since it’s one of the questions we hear most. Kids who start in upper primary often do brilliantly, since they’re more focused and motivated because it’s their own choice to be there.
- What should my child wear to their first lesson?
Nothing fancy is needed for a trial. Comfortable, stretchy clothing they can move freely in, with bare feet or socks, is fine to start. If they end up loving it and staying on, we’ll let you know exactly what’s needed for their specific class.
- What happens after the free trial? Do I have to commit straight away?
No pressure at all. At the end of the two weeks, we’ll have a chat about how your child went and what class might suit them going forward. There’s no obligation to enrol on the spot, it’s genuinely just a chance to try it out first.
